The Idol Behind the Obedience
Reading: Exodus 20:1-6 | Matthew 22:36-40

Devotional: The rich young ruler confidently declared that he had kept the commandments since his youth. His moral record appeared impressive. Yet Jesus, looking at him with love, identified something the man could not see in himself. His wealth had become a god. He was keeping the commandments while breaking the first one. This is one of the most subtle dangers in the life of a religious person: the ability to appear obedient on the outside while harboring a hidden idol on the inside. Jesus does not merely want rule-followers. He wants hearts that are fully surrendered to Him above all else.

Reflection Questions:

What do you find most difficult to release when God calls you to surrender it?
Is there something in your life that functions as a god, competing for the loyalty that belongs to Christ alone?
Practical Application: Write down three things you would find most difficult to give up if God asked you to. Pray over that list honestly, asking God to reveal whether any of those things have taken the place that belongs only to Him.
