Bad News Before Good News
Reading: Romans 3:23 and Romans 6:23
Devotional: Before the gospel can be truly received as good news, the bad news must be understood. Romans 3:23 declares that all people have sinned and fallen short of God's glory. Romans 6:23 declares that the consequence of that sin is death. These are sobering realities. But they are necessary ones. A doctor who withholds a difficult diagnosis does his patient no favors. In the same way, a believer who softens or omits the reality of sin does no true service to those who need the gospel. Honest, loving proclamation of the full gospel — both its weight and its wonder — is an act of genuine care.
Reflection: Are there people in your life to whom you have been reluctant to share the full truth of the gospel? What fear or hesitation holds you back, and how might you address it?
